The most important sources of global greenhouse emissions are:
made of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels and industrial processes;
made of Methane;
made of carbon dioxide from forestry and other land use.
European Union is the 3rd most important carbon dioxide emitter in the world, after China and the U.S, and it accounted for 3,469,671 kt CO2 emission in 2015.
* according to the EDGAR database, created by European Commission and Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency released in 2015
CO2 emissions regulations and policies
The European Commission set ambitious goals for CO2 emissions reduction in the next 40 years.
01. Sustainable model
It has a clear objective to adopt a cost-effective path towards a sustainable and responsible model, that is not detrimental for the environment, believing in an affordable transition.
02. Climate Action
In the context of it Climate Action, the European Commission fixed the bar high with its low-carbon roadmap planning on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 with respect to 1990 levels.
03. Technology
This means cutting emissions by 40% by 2030 and by 60% within 2040.
The introduction and spreading of innovative technologies will constitute a key factor in order to win this challenge.
